Abstract Fractures of the femur in children are usually the result of high-velocity injury. Older methods of treatment, i.e., prolonged traction, offer no advantage over early spica immobilization and markedly increase the hospitalization time and expense. It is recommended that traction be abandoned except in unusual circumstances.
