Abstract Traditional barriers to large-scale mammalian culture have now been addressed, with the standard stirred-tank reactor emerging as industry's technology of choice. The issues of adapting cells to suspension culture, shear sensitivity and oxygen supply have been largely resolved. But for many low-volume and specialty applications, such as the production of viral vaccines and gene therapies, reactor technology remains diversified, with reactor types ranging from roller bottles to stacked plates and hollow fibers.
