Abstract Share this page

In this study we examine the stages children undergo to acquire gender identity and sex-role, as well as factors which condition this evolution. Our methodology involves the presentation of grahic images (children and adults both dressed and undressed, parts of the body, and their various functions) following Piagets clinical method. The results show that: 1) The acquisition of sexual identity and sex-role in its most important aspects, takes place between two and three years of age; 2) Gender identity does not become constant until the child is between five and seven years of age; 3) The assigned sexual roles reproduce in a noticeably direct manner the characteristics of the family nucleus, specially in very young children.
