Abstract During cell division the cohesin complex mediates the pairing of sister chromatids. Emerging evidence shows that cohesin also has roles in interphase cells. New studies, including that of Gullerova and Proudfoot (2008) in this issue, reveal how cohesin is targeted to specific sites on chromosomes and implicate cohesin in the regulation of gene expression.
