Abstract Share this page

Foreword The ecosystem of the Niger Delta of Nigeria with its extensive richness in biodiversity possesses a large and diverse fauna of moths and butterflies. Their mufti-colored and large-sized wings have made these fascinating creatures conspicuous and attractive. The adoption of the name 'Monarchs' is due to their size which has offered this group of insects a supremacy over other insects. Also the edibility of some larval forms of the monarchs [e.g.the Saturniids, Lasciocampids etc] has contributed in establishing their economic importance as they serve as a source of protein to some rural populations of Nigeria,Information on the insect biodiversity of the mangroves and forests of the Niger Delta is inadequate. This book is intended to serve as an identification guide and as a resource to those involved in Forest Entomolgy, Nutrition and Agriculture. The illustrative description of the eggs, larvae, pupae and adults of monarchs of the Niger Delta will enhance their conservation and appeal to a wide readership both in Africa and other continents.
