In their thought-provoking Series paper in The Lancet Neurology,1 John Constantino and Tony Charman highlight challenges and opportunities in reconceptualising the diagnosis of autism. The issues they discuss assume great importance in view of the potential for substantial improvements in care for people with autism spectrum disorders (ASDs), with early detection, more effective intervention, and positive outcomes in adulthood.2 Several key points deserve further attention.
