Abstract Nitric oxide can accelerate ulcer healing and exert anti-inflammatory effects. Addition of a nitric oxide-releasing moiety to mesalamine significantly boosts its anti-inflammatory activity. NO-releasing mesalamine suppresses inflammatory cytokine production and reduces leukocyte infiltration.
