Abstract Share this page

The Internet, which allows anyone with access to a computer to become a global publisher, is challenging traditional publishing patterns. In the biomedical domain, medical journals are providing more and more content online, both free and for a fee. Open Access approach to articles is an imperative of modern science, and indicates a free and limitless access to online library of scientific research articles. Open Access approach won the battle against traditional publishing, and in future it will cement its place .The Open Access initiative derives from several premises: medical libraries can no longer afford journal subscriptions; society benefits from the open exchange of ideas; society has in large part already paid for this research; the Internet provides an available venue. The traditional journal publishers model, however, has functioned well over many years with a robust peer review system and increasing Internet digital components permitting search and cross referencing, including elements of the Open Access model.
