The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of using activated maize cob impregnated with magnetic nanoparticles, namely, ferrosoferric oxide (Fe3O4) for methylene blue (MB) adsorption. A 25 fractional factorial design was used to evaluate the optimum adsorption conditions for maximum dye removal and chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction. The optimum efficiencies of MB dye removal and COD reduction were 99.63% and 99.48%, respectively. The individual effects on adsorption of MB dye aqueous solution using acid-modified maize cob impregnated with ferrosoferric oxide (AMMC-Fe3O4) were also investigated. The kinetic experimental data were analyzed by fitting the data to the pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The regression results showed that the adsorption kinetic was more accurately represented by pseudo-second-order. The thermodynamic parameters such as the change in free energy (ΔGo), enthalpy (ΔHo) and entropy (ΔSo) of adsorption were determined. These values show that the adsorption was endothermic and spontaneous. Results revealed that AMMC-Fe3O4 enhanced the dye removal and COD reduction in the adsorption process.
