Abstract Because many of the diseases and disorders that affect the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and associated masticatory muscles occur in the age group of patients generally seen by the orthodontist, their recognition is of great importance in planning and performing orthodontic therapy. This article discusses the diagnosis and clinical significance of the various conditions that may be encountered.
