Clays show, depending on their mineralogy, considerable changes in properties when they are exposed to salt solutions. In this contribution 4 different clays and one clay data set from the literature were exposed to various salt concentrations. An empirical formulation describing the decay of the liquid limit as a function of the fraction of clay minerals and the standard liquid limit with water with increasing salt concentration is proposed. With this tool an estimation of the influence of salts on the engineering properties can be given.
