A random selection of 186 water utilities was used for this study in which raw and finished water samples were collected from each facility five times throughout a year and analyzed for iron and aluminum by atomic absorption techniques. The water samples were categorized by the supply source (ground, surface, or a combination of both), the type of water (raw, finished, or untreated distribution samples), and the type of coagulation used in the treatment process (aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride, other coagulants such as cationic polymers, or no coagulant). The samples were also categorized according to the 10 US Environmental Protection Agency regions and 4 population categories. The results indicate that aluminum is more likely to exist in surface waters than in groundwaters and that there is a 40-50 percent chance that alum coagulation increases the aluminum concentration of finished water above its original concentration in the raw water. Para este estudio se seleccionaron al azar más de 186 servicios de agua pública de los cuales se tomaron muestras de agua cruda y procesada cinco veces durante un ano. Para determinar el contenido de hierro y aluminio, se analizaron estas muestras utilizando la téenica de absorcion atomica. Las muestras de agua f ueron categorizadas segun sus fuentes (agua subterrânea, de superficie, o una combination de las dos), el tipo de agua (cruda, procesada,o de el tipo de coagulante empleado en el proceso de tratamiento (sulfato de aluminio, cloruro férrico, otros coagulantes como polimeros catiónicos o no coagulantes). Las muestras tambien fueron categorizadas de acuerdo a las 10 Agencias Regionales de Protectión del Ambiente de los Ε. U. y a 4 categorias de población. Los resultados indican que el aluminio propende a existir más en agua de superficie que en aguas subterráneas y que hay la probabilidad del 40 al 50 por ciento de que los coagulantes de alumbre aumenten la concentratión del agua procesada sobre su concentración original en el agua cruda.
