Abstract Although animal models have been useful in guiding vaccine development, HIV/AIDS models have not yielded a clear correlate of immunity nor given consistent results on the potential efficacy of various vaccine approaches. Further development and improved uniformity in the use of animal models would maximize their potential to meet the urgent worldwide need for a safe and effective HIV vaccine.
