Abstract CD1a positive cells of dendritic shape were detected in the intima of human arteries by immunohistochemical investigation. Analysis of contiguous parallel sections showed that the CD1a positive cells also stained with S-100 and expressed HLA-DR. The CD1a+/S-100+/HLA-DR+ vascular dendritic cell is a type of dendritic cell which participates in atherosclerotic lesion formation. This finding has important implications for understanding atherogenesis and offers a link between immune mechanisms and atherosclerotic lesion formation.
