Abstract A 6-day-old Black male infant presented with diarrhoea and biochemical evidence of severe electrolyte imbalance. Despite treatment with intravenous fluids and antibiotics, he died within 24 hours of admission. Enterotoxigenic Vibrio cholerae, biotype E1 Tor, serotype Inaba, was isolated from the blood. The significance of this finding is discussed.
