Biography

Dr. Emily F. Piven received her clinical doctorate of Occupational Therapy from Creighton University in 2004, her Master’s of Health Education from the Medical College of Georgia in 1980, and her baccalaureate degree in Occupational Therapy from Virginia Commonwealth University in 1973. Prior to joining the faculty at UTEP, Dr. Piven practiced for 28 years in the areas of geriatrics, pediatrics, psychiatry, mental retardation, and rehabilitation, in such facilities as home health agencies, nursing homes, private and public schools, mental hospitals, and in intermediate care facilities for the retarded. She was in private practice for 18 years in South Carolina and Georgia. Dr. Piven has a wide breath of knowledge in her field. She was an educator for 10 years. She continues to publish her research and serves as Associate Editor of two editorial boards.

Research Interest

Dr. Piven’s major area of research interest is in secondary prevention of diabetes with Mexican-American elders and adolescents as emerging adults. She has published articles in chronic disease, complementary medicine, cultural competency, and collaborative articles in nonlinear dynamical system perspectives and biomedical engineering. She is currently volunteering with the World Federation of Occupational Therapists to develop an international online course for training therapists in skills that are necessary to help disaster survivors worldwide.
