Biography

Ferdinando Sartucci is born in Marciano della Chiana (Arezzo, Italy) on May 28th, 1950. His basic education took place in S. Miniato (Pisa), where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree from the Liceo Scientifico “G. Marconi” in 1969, and his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Pisa, Italy, summa cum laude, in the year 1975; specialist either in Clinical Neurology and Child Neuropsychiatry, summa cum laude. He has been at beginning Assistant of professor in Clinical Neurology from 1981 up to 1989; then senior assistant up to 1993 and chief of the section of Clinical Neurophysiology at Department of Neurosciences, Pisa University Medical School, Italy up to 2009; actually is chairmen of Neurology Section at the same department. Married with Patricia; two daughters: Melissa and Cecilia. From 1985 to 1994 he was Contract Professor at post-graduate Medical School in Neurology; from 1990 at Neurophysiopathology Medical School. Starting from 2000 he is Associate Professor at Neuroscience Department, Unit of Neurology, Pisa University Medical School, President of University Degree on Techniques of Neurophysiopathology and Member of the Board of Faculty, Professor of Neurology at Medicine and Surgery degree, Associate Professor at CNR Institute of Neuroscience, Pisa, Italy. He has co-worked with Pisa CNR Institutes of Computer Sciences and Neurophysiology and with the local University Department of Computer Sciences. In 1988 and 1991 he attended as "Visiting Professor" at the Department of Neurology and Clinical Neurophysiology, Mount Sinai School of Medicine of the City University of New York (USA); in 1994 at the CNR Institute of Neurophysiology in Pisa. He has been invited speaker and chairman in many national and international congresses; he was member in the board of several national and international meeting or updating courses. He was on the board of the Italian Societies of Clinical Neurophysiology from 1996 to 2002 and from 1997 is in the board of Italian Society of Psychophysiology and from 2003 to 2007 in those of Neurology. Presently is President of Italia Society of Psychophysiology. He has developed his research activities in clinical and neurophysiopathology field, and he has published 183 “in extenso” publications on English and Italian journals, 9 books and is co-author of 397 abstracts and 13 book’s chapter.

Research Interest

The main techniques are transcranial magnetic stimulation and transcranial direct current stimulation, also in combination with magnetic resonance imaging and EEG. The main goals of his research are to understand the mechanisms underlying cortical plasticity and cortical connectivity in the healthy human brain aimed to develop novel therapeutic approaches for recovery of neurological functions.
