Biography

Guojun Li, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Head and Neck Surgery and Epidemiology at the The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. He received his M.D. with a major in medicine and public health from the Tongji Medical University and earned a M.S. in food and biomedical nutrition from the North Dakota State University, and subsequently his Ph.D. training in the cellular and molecular biology at the same university. Dr. Li then obtained his Ph.D. in molecular epidemiology and cancer chemoprevention from the University of Texas at Houston, School of Public Health and continued his NCI-R25 postdoctoral cancer prevention training at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Li maintains active and productive translational research on cancer treatment, early detection, and prevention. He combines his molecular expertise with his epidemiological skills and approaches to identify biomarkers and to use these biomarkers to identify subgroups at high-risk for cancer prevention and prediction of clinical outcomes. Dr. Li’s current funded projects are to identify genetic susceptible biomarkers for treatment, early detection, and prevention of head and neck cancers. He has expanded his research to explore novel ways to predict clinical outcome (i.e., recurrence, second primary cancer, etc.) to understand molecular predictors of cancer prognosis in head and neck cancer patients. Most recently, Dr. Li has led research directed toward identifying potential genetic risk factors for HPV-associated malignancies in our patient population. Thus, his unique and broad academic background and research experience in cancer prevention has provided him with the knowledge and experience necessary to combine molecular biological approaches with epidemiological strategies to address research aims proposed in this application.
