Biography

Dr Leonard Amaral received his M.D. from SUNY (1964) and his Ph.D. (1967) and conducted Post-Doctoral studies (1967) at the Laboratory of Professor Dr Severo Ochoa, Nobel Laureate (NYU). He was appointed Director of Research and Assistant Director of Pathology of the Methodist Hospital of Bklyn, NY (1968-1977) and Clinical Associate Professor of Pathology of SUNY , Bklyn, NY (1974-1992). In 1977 he was appointed Director of Clinical Pathology (Chem/Immunol/Microbiology). In 1999 he was appointed Director and Professor of Mycobacteriology of the Inst Hyg & Trop Med of the Univ Nova de Lisboa and in 2010 awarded the title “Distinguished Senior Professor of the FCF of Portugal and Professor Emeritus of the IHMT/UNL. Currently, he is Invited Professor of the Univ Szeged, Szeged Hungaary. He has received various honors for his work in cancer/immunology and international recognition in drug development for therapy of multi-drug resistant (MDR) bacterial infections and the physical chemistry of efflux pumps responsible for the development of mdr phenotypes of cancer and bacteria. During his research career he has published almost 300 papers, over 20 chapters in textbooks, and currently is on the editorial board of 10 international journals.

His research interest mainly focuses on bacterial infections.
