Biography

Dr. Lydgia Jackson received her PhD in Microbiology and Immunology in 2004 at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. Currently, she is a Research Assistant Professor working at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center in the Microbiology and Immunology Department. Previous studies have focused on the role of iron in pathogenesis in Neisseria gonorrhoeae using microarrays and Next Generation Sequencing for examining global mRNA and sRNA expression data. Intracellular iron levels are sensed by a global regulator protein Fur (ferric uptake regulation), directly regulating gene expression in cellular pathways. She has extensively studied the gonococcal iron-regulon and found that in addition to direct regulation, Fur exerts control indirectly through NrrF, a small iron-regulated RNA that acts to control select transcript levels by increasing message degradation. Currently, as part of a bioinformatics team, her research interest has included comparative genomics and genome data mining, and comparative and molecular phylogenetics, comparing the iron-regulon in pathogenic and nonpathogenic Neisseria and how divergence of the iron-regulon may give insights into pathogenicity.
