Pulmonary fibrosis is a condition that causes lung scarring and stiffness. It develops when the alveoli, tiny air sacs that transfer oxygen to the blood, become damaged and inflamed. Body tries to heal the damage with scars, but these scars collapse the alveoli and make the lungs less elastic. Changes in the lungs can also increase the blood pressure in the pulmonary artery.
Disease statistical analysis in Russia on pulmonary fibrosis gave the result as of 49 markers analyzed, 48 are detectable in plasma ; univariate analysis identified 12 proteins that are differentially expressed in IPF compared to controls . Five MMPs (MMP7, MMP1, MMP3, MMP8, MMP9), two chemokines (CXCL10, CCL11), FAS, IL12B, and the soluble TNF receptors (TNFRSF1A, TNFRSF1B) are significantly overexpressed; AGER is significantly underexpressed in plasma of patients with IPF compared to controls.
