Sarcoidosis is a systemic granulomatous disorder of unknown cause characterised by frequent pulmonary involvement. The disease occurs throughout the world, affecting both sexes, and all races and ages.
Sarcoidosis primarily affects the lung and lymphatic system. The patients are usually young to middle-aged adults, appearing more commonly in individuals of African descent. The symptoms of sarcoidosis can vary greatly, depending on which organs are involved. Most patients initially complain of a persistent dry cough, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
In Russia we have 4-9 new cases per 100.000 adults per year. The prevalence has a wide variation in different areas of Russia (according to activity of MD and scientists) from 5.8 to 47 per 100.000 adults. More than 80% of the patients have classical intrathoracic sarcoidosis in which the X-ray was diagnostic.
