Using the lipophilic fluorescent probe pyrene, the anticholesterol effect of nicotinic acid on the fluidity profile of the goat erythrocyte liposome is studied. The distinct phase transition in the liposome around 33 degree - 37 degree which disappears for 1:1 molar ratio of lipid and cholesterol, reappears when nicotinic acid is added and the molar ratio becomes 1:1:1 for lipid, cholesterol and nicotinic acid. The interaction between cholesterol and nicotinic acid is probably mechanical in nature and form study of the absorption spectra, no dirert evidence for complex formation is obtained.
