Complexes of Copper (II) with N1- isonicotinyl-3-methyl-5-pyrazolone, (IMP) and N1-isonicotinoyl-3-methyl-4-hydroxbenzylidine-5-pyrazolone, (IMHP) having the formula Cu(NO3)2 IMP and CuCl2IMHP were synthesized and biological activity studied. In vitro cytotoxic studies using these drugs indicated that 100 percent cytotoxicity could be produced to Ehrilich ascites tumour cells at a concentration of 10 mu g/ml . Tissue culture studies using Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells resulted in 50 percent and 70 percent growth inhibition with 1 mug of Cu(NO3)2 IMP and CuCl2IMHP respectively.Administration of the drugs (30 mg/kg for 5 days) to Ehrilich ascites tumour bearing Swiss albino mice resulted in an increase in the life span of 80 percent with the former while, the animals treated with the latter drug remained free of tumour for 90 days.
