The aim of the study was to screen antibacterial activities of methanol and acetone extracts of three spices Trigonella foenum, Coriandrum sativum and Brassica nigra available in India. Seeds extract of the spices with methanol and acetone were screened for antibacterial activity against two Gram negative and two Gram positive bacteria i.e. Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Lactococcus lactis and Bacillus amyloliquifaciens respectively. The in vitro antibacterial activity was performed by agar well diffusion method. Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli were found most sensitive against acetone extract of Trigonella foenum. Methanol extract of Coriandrum sativum were found most effective against Escherichia coli and Lactococcus lactis. Methanol extract of Brassica nigra found effective against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Bacillus amyloliquifaciens and Escherichia coli. Acetone extract of Brassica nigra was found effective against Bacillus amyloliquifaciens, Lactococcus lactis and Escherichia coli. The results obtained in the present study suggest that Trigonella foenum, Brassica nigra and Coriandrum sativum revealed a significant scope to develop a novel broad spectrum of antibacterial herbal formulation.
