Abstract

The Martha Entenmann Tinnitus Research Center, Inc., and the staff of the International Tinnitus Journal (IT]) extend our sincerest condolences and sympathy to the family of Robert M. Johnson, who died March 31, 1999. We recognize Dr. Johnson's pioneering contributions to the diagnosis of tinnitus and to the use of instrumentation for providing relief to tinnitus patients. Together with his colleagues at the Oregon Health Sciences Center, Portland, Oregon, Bob provided leadership on an international level, attracting the attention of professionals and patients worldwide. His professional interests were not limited to his chosen field of audiology (in attempting to understand, diagnose, and treat hearing disorders) but also expressed themselves clinically in developing modalities of therapy highlighted by auditory masking to provide tinnitus relief to patients with tinnitus of the severe disabling type. His sharing of information with colleagues and students will always be appreciated. He was an outstanding teacher who evoked in his students profound respect and affection. We at the ITJ have benefited from Bob's teachings and sharing of clinical experiences and always will remember him not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his humanity. We are fortunate to have known Bob as a teacher, colleague, and friend.
