Nephroprotective and hepatoprotective effect of ethanolic extract of spondias pinnata. Hypoglycemic activity was carried out using STZ induced hyperglycemia model. The rats were divided into different groups and diabetes was induced by administration of freshly prepared STZ (55 mg/kg, i.p.). The diabetic rats were given ethanolic extract of Spondias pinnata (100 and 200 mg/kg) and Glibenclamide (10 mg/kg) for 14 days, and their hypoglycemic activity such as blood glucose level, total urea and creatinine level along with effect on body weight, liver function tests were assessed. The treatment with ethanolic extract of Spondias pinnata did not show significant hypoglycemic activity as glibenclamide. Spondias pinnata had significantly reduced creatinine level (P<0.05 to P<0.01) and little effect on normalization of liver function enzymes, respectively. This study suggests that ethanolic extract of Spondias pinnata shows no significant activity in STZ-induced diabetic rats as an antidiabetic but suggests good liver and kidney protective effect which can be explored in future studies.
