Mixing is an important unit operation encountered in chemical and allied industries. Mixing can be achieved by many ways. One such way is fluidized bed. The efficiency of conventional fluidized bed is enhanced by semifluidized bed reactor. Semi-fluidization is a novel solid-fluid contact technique conceived in the late eighties. Many investigations have been made into the various aspects of the phenomenon which have been reported in the literature. Semi-fluidization will become increasingly important, specifically in the design of several physical and chemical systems. This review presents a concise picture of the various aspects of semi-fluidization (momentum transfer and industrial applications) for a better understanding of the phenomenon and to provide more rational approaches to the design of semi-fluidization systems.
