Abstract

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome: Insights into Pathogenesis, Diagnosis, Prognosis, Pharmacological and Non-Pharmacological Treatment

Ahmed M Kabel

Polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in women of reproductive age. Its prevalence may reach up to 18% of women of reproductive age. It usually presents with irregular menstrual cycles, signs of hyper-androgenism and insulin resistance. Patients with PCOS are at increased risk for developing reproductive, metabolic and cardiovascular disorders, including infertility, insulin resistance, diabetes mellitus type 2, hypertension and atherosclerosis. Moreover, it may affect daily physical activities. Management of PCOS aims to lower body weight and insulin levels, restore fertility, treat hirsutism or acne, restore regular menstruation and prevent complications.
