Cell adhesion can be defined as the binding of a cell to an extracellular matris of another cell through call adhesion molecules or adhesins, such as selections, integrins, and cadherins. Cell adhesion interlinks the cytoplasm of the cells thus, contributes to signal transduction.
Cellular adhesion is essential in maintaining multi cellular structure and is also essential for the pathogenesis of infectious organisms. Adhesion occurs by reversible reactions which occur on cell surface proteins which are triggered by environmental stimuli. Forces and interactions may include hydrolysis/hydrophobic reactions, electrostatic reactions, Brownian motion, and facilitation by polysaccharides or bio film polymers.
