Language Disorder

When a child has difficulty getting his meaning across using speech, writing, or even gestures, we may be seeing a language disorder. Difficulty expressing meaning to other people is called an expressive language disorder. Difficulty understanding other speakers is called a receptive language disorder.

There are three kinds of language disorders.

• Receptive language issues involve difficulty understanding what others are saying.

• Expressive language issues involve difficulty expressing thoughts and ideas.

• Mixed receptive-expressive language issues involve difficulty understanding and using spoken language.
