Optic switch A device whose optical transmission properties can be varied by an externally applied field or by some other external influence. Electric, magnetic, and surface acoustic wave techniques are all used for this purpose. By these means, light may be deflected away from a detector, thus switching the beam. When a fiber optic network carries a light signal from one phone or computer to another, it may be required to move the signal between different fiber paths. To accomplish this, a switch is required that can transfer the signal with a minimum loss of voice or data quality.
