Peripheral Artery Disease

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is similar to coronary artery disease (CAD), which is narrowing of the peripheral arteries to the legs, stomach, arms, and head - most commonly in the arteries of the legs. Both PAD and CAD are caused by atherosclerosis that narrows and blocks arteries in various critical regions of the body. People with peripheral arterial disease have a higher risk of coronary artery disease, heart attack or stroke and when left untreated it may lead to gangrene and amputation. Most common symptoms of PAD are cramping, pain or tiredness in the leg or hip muscles while walking or climbing stairs. PAD is easily diagnosed in a simple, painless way and treated easily by leading a heart-healthy lifestyle and following the recommendations of healthcare professional.
