Thyroidectomy

Thyroidectomy is the removal of complete or a part of the thyroid gland. It produces hormones that regulate body metabolism. Thyroidectomy is used to treat thyroid disorders, such as overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism), a noncancerous enlargement of the thyroid (goiter) and cancer. If only a part of the thyroid is removed (partial thyroidectomy), the thyroid may be able to function normally after surgery. If the entire thyroid is removed (total thyroidectomy) it requires daily treatment with thyroid hormone to replace your thyroid's natural function.
