Krabbe disease is a genetic disorder which is inherited. It involves the absence of myelin around the nerve fibers. This leads to the death of the cells in the nervous system which in turn result in the improper functioning of various body parts. This disease is common in infants and involves the symptoms of vomiting, loss of head control, seizures, defective motor functions, and blindness.
The extrapolated prevalence in Singapore, is found to be 43 for two times of 4,353,893 population estimation used.There is no cure for Krabbe disease yet. The treatment involves mainly the relief of the severity of the symptoms. This includes anticonvulsant medication for seizures or spasms, Bone Marrow Transplantation and Cord Blood Transfusion.
