Academy of Agriculture, Science and Letters of Verona

The Academy of Agriculture was established in 1768 by the experts and personalities of the City of Verona who were inventive, initiative and intelligent but the main credit goes to Veronese Pietro Arduino who was distinguished professor of Botany at the University of Padua for its establishment as he carried out thorough investigation on the state of the Venetian countryside. Arduino introduced in the Senate a report, the result of painstaking surveys, in which he described the condition of painful backwardness and anarchy where farming activities were carried out in the territory, indicating, among the solutions, the value of setting up in every city of the state academy of agriculture, which could be helpful in passing the information related to most modern and effective farming techniques on to farmers. The Academy of Agriculture of Verona established itself as one of the short cultural institution in the city whereas most of the Academies ended and extinguished prematurely. The Academy took the financial support of Venice and led the allocation of a prestigious venue, along with a rich library and a museum of natural finds and also built the road that led from Verona Lessinia after ten years after its establishment. The Academy thus brought betterment to the society, which allowed her to develop, in the first '800, its full potential in studies and research. Since then, through many unpleasant conditions, the Academy has continued its work to the present day, now most popularly known as Academy of Agriculture Sciences and Letters of Verona, because they focus not only in the narrow field of agriculture, but in the most diverse fields of knowledge. It is not wrong to grant her real merits, if Verona today is national and international vanguard in the food industry for the production, processing, research and teaching.
