American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) was established in 1975 as the Association of Sleep Disorders Centers. It is the only professional society dedicated exclusively in the field of medical subspecialty of sleep medicine. The current president of the organization is Dr. Ronald D. Chervin and Head office is situated in USA. AASM sets standards and advance the excellence in sleep medicine health care, education and research. The Academy has a membership of thousands of accredited member sleep centers with individual members, scientists, including physicians and other health care professionals. AASM works with a vision where they believe in achieving optimal health through better sleep. And with a mission to improvise the sleep health and promotes high quality patient centred care by means advocacy, education, strategic research, and practice standards. It develops guidelines for the sleep field by taking an initiative towards the advancement in the in the service of sleep care accredits both sleep disorders centers and home sleep apnea testing programs and enhance the access of patient to a the high quality sleep care and issued an essential resources such as the Associated Events, International Classification of Sleep Disorders, and the AASM Manual for the Scoring of Sleep. The AASM develops a Telemedicine SLEEPTM which improves the patient health by electronically communicating the medical information to evaluate, diagnose and treatment of a Disease. The telemedicine is a convenient health care center, improving efficiency and quality to the practice of medicine. The journal SLEEP is also published by the Associated Professional Sleep Societies (APSS), amalgamation of by the Sleep Research Society and AASM. The Academy also organizes prime educational events such as Sleep Medicine Trend, publishes the latest research in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, further it promotes awareness of the importance of seeking sleep-related medical care from a board certified sleep medicine physicians and with the health care professionals at an AASM accredited facility. The Academy also presents an award like Nathaniel Kleitman Distinguished Service Award to the individual who have made a significant contribution in the service of sleep medicine field.
