American Association of Occupational Health Nurses (AAOHN)

American Association of Occupational Health Nurses is the association of licensed nursing professionals engaged in the practice of occupation and environmental health nursing. This association is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation. The scope is to develop standards of professional conduct for the occupational and environmental nurse as described in the AAOHN Code of Ethics, define the scope of practice and set standards for occupation and environmental health nurse and to promote the health and safety of work and workplace communities. They provide continuous learning opportunities for occupational and environmental health nurses and professionals offered through the AAOHN Academy. They encouraging and facilitating research and advocate for occupational and environmental health nursing in business, hospitals, government and other professional areas. They respond to issues critical to the practice of occupational and environmental nursing and advocate for occupational and environmental health nursing in business, hospitals, government and other professional areas. There are 5,000 members located across the United States, US Territories and the World.  AAOHN is comprised of 120 chapter organizations that are incorporated agencies under their state regulations. Each chapter has its own by-laws and officers, but follows guidance from AAOHN, nationally. Various AAOHN committees work to obtain funding for these types of projects, collaborate with other organizations that are doing research and provide input into the design and implementation of studies that can keep moving occupational and environmental health nursing forward. They develop mainly 3 committees which are Chapter Committee, responsible for development of resources, based on chapter needs. Consult with chapter leaders. Review chapter models and recommend strategies for their success. Practice Committee, which review, revise and develop practice education and guidance products. Answer practice-related questions and Website Committee, for regular review of the website in pursuit of errors and datedness; review and respond to the Peer-to-Peer Ask It questions; make practical recommendations for improvement and serve as the subject matter experts if there is a web redesign. They ensure that occupational and environmental health nurses are seen as the authority on health, safety, productivity and disability management for worker populations.
