Earlier the society was known as Pharmaceutical Center Uruguay, formed on September 5, 1888, after that it’s named changed to Association of Pharmacy and Chemistry of Uruguay on June 15, 1923, and from March 15 1948 to its current name. The headquarter of ACPU is in Montevideo, Uruguay. The ACPU is a professional association with an industry association, voluntary membership, which groups all Pharmaceutical Chemists and graduates of Faculty of Chemistry of the University of the Republic. From 1948 to 2016, it has been an organization of professionals working together for the benefit of the profession, given the present leadership in promoting change processes of professional practice and service to society. Serves its members through continuing professional development (offering courses, seminars, workshops, etc.), participation in activities related to the profession, information and union and social activities.. The members of this association include the experts from scientific disciplinary. AQFU also serve as host of other associations related to the profession, such as Biochemistry Association Uruguaya (ABU), the Uruguayan Association of Cosmetic Science (AUCC), the Uruguayan branch of the Organization of Pharmaceutical Iberolatinoamericanos (OFIL) and Uruguayan society of Parenteral Nutrition (SUNUT). The AQFU is also a founding member and active participant of FEFAS (South American Pharmaceutical Federation, 1992), FEPAFAR (Pan American Federation of Pharmacy, 1948) and the Pharmaceutical Forum of the Americas (1999).
