Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering

The Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering was founded in 1975 at the Technical University of Graz by Stefan Schuy in Austria. The Society was dedicated to support the collaboration of technology and medicine in research, education and practical application from the very beginning. The number of members was growing continuously over the years to actually stabilize between 200 and 250, including senior, honorary, aiding and institutional members. The Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering is an educational and Scientific non- profit organisation within the field of clinical medical and biological engineering. This Society encourages research and the application of knowledge, and also aims at spreading information and promoting collaboration. The specific aims of  the Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering are : to encourage research activities in the field of medicine/biology and engineering sciences, to develop new technologies for improving health and quality of life under ethical standards, providing position and duties to biomedical engineers and developing their job profiles, constructing guidelines for under and post graduate education and training in biomedical engineering, promoting communication and collaboration between industries, societies and industrial organizations, Representing Austria in the field of research and education in biomedical engineering. The Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering sees itself as a scientific society with excellent national and international networking. Members of Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering are usually peoples who research actively from researching institutes and hospitals and from companies. The Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering is Portal for this field of research and teaching. The Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering organizes relevant conferences, meetings, workshops and symposia on topics of biomedical engineering. In addition, it organizes various seminars, for example, the TSB Seminar of the Working Group Hospital technology and thus contributes a significant role in the Austrian hospital sector. In future also the Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering also play a crucial role when it comes to advice for approval of medical devices, prototyping and market introduction of new medical devices and the future academic education in this field. The Austrian Society for Biomedical Engineering is a member of the international umbrella organization IFMBE and maintains excellent international contacts. In future it is also involved in the newly established European sister organization EAMBES. It operates in cooperation with the Austrian Computer Society the Working Group for medical computer science and has very good contacts with the Austrian Physical Society and the Austrian Society of Surgical Research.
