Egyptian Multiple Sclerosis Society was founded in 2013. The story of Multiple Sclerosis scientific research and hygiene started in 1954 by the MD thesis of late prof. M. Mostafa who gave prevalence of M.S. 3.7% within the Neurology patients in outpatient facilities. In 1964 late prof. El Garem in Alexandria gave prevalence of 0.5% among another neurological disease at Alexandria Neurology outpatient clinic. In Cairo University late prof. Y. Taher in 1967 on the same bases gave commonness of 1.4%. In 1995 Hashem et al reported the popularity of different types of M.S. Not only so, in 2003 Hashem et al began to notice the presence of many families having M.S., also he faced many cases of adolescence M.S. with special pattern of clinical presentation including facial nerve and ocular motility due to brain stem affection.
Hashem et al in a master degree study in various Governorates: Egypt both North (e.g. Alexandria) and South (e.g. Assuit) and latterly door to door survey in Alkosier and Alkharga Oasis giving prevalence of about 25/100,000 with more familial cases. 15 years back the Egyptian Society for Multiple Sclerosis was founded in Egypt and its activity involved global relation with MSIF and different societies for M.S. patient care as well repeated scientific meetings in collaboration with M.S. day in 28/5 consistently. More over the Health Insurance organization accepted the societies offer for administration of Egyptian M.S. patients with Beta Interferon and negotiations are running for oral disease modifying drugs. Also many M.S. centres had been established in Alexandria University, Cairo University, and Ain Shams University for patient management, direction and awareness. Lastly the activity of MS society with collaboration with Egyptian Society of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry published at least 40 articles of different aspects of M.S, 15 Doctors thesis and 20 Master’s thesis.Read More»
