The European Society of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP) has evolved from the Union of European child psychiatrist (UEP), which held its first meeting in October 1954 in Magglingen, Switzerland.At meeting, Dither Moritz (Switzerland) was elected President and Jakob Lutz (also Switzerland) managing president. Profs. Donner (Finland), Fontes (Portugal), Michaux (France), De Ruyter (Netherlands) and Sanctis (Italy) were elected vice-presidents. Dr. Friedemann (Switzerland) was elected Secretary General. The UEP held several conferences over the following years until its official founding in September 1960 in Paris at the first congress of this organization held in Paris September 16th to 19th 1960.The organization changed its name twice: in 1982 in the European Association for Child Psychiatry and after the conference in Lausanne (1983), the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (ESCAP).ESCAP has the following objectives: Promoting the mental health of children and adolescents in Europe, to increase the quality of life for children and families, to ensure the right to a healthy development and well-being of children, for Europe's knowledge and skills in child psychiatry, to facilitate and expand the links between European countries in mental health issues, to disseminate the results of research and experience by publishing reports and organizing conferences and scientific meetings and work with international organizations with similar or related objectives.
