The European Society for Swallowing Disorders(ESSD) is an association of and for health care providers working, doing research and studying in the field of dysphagia and swallowing disorders. The Society has been built on the former European Study Group for Dysphagia and Globus and is a formally registered, nonprofit, international association. Aim of the Society is to promote care, education and research in swallowing physiology and swallowing disorders, to formulate professional standards of practice and guidelines, to encourage clinical and basic research in all areas related to normal and disordered swallowing and to represent and promote the field to national and international authorities and societies and the European Union. The ESSD board will consist of 12 members. Terms are four years and every two years half the places on the board are elected. Current members may present again. Elections are carried out online with a voting programme that ensures secrecy of vote. Candidates present a brief description of their professional background, affiliations, and ideas for the society and these are placed on the web a month before the elections. Health care professionals working in the field of normal or disordered swallowing, training or doing research in the field can be members of the Society. Number of members is unlimited and they can be from anywhere in the world. The Society also provides an annual congress in Europe; courses for different levels of professional expertise; a website with information about the Society, future congresses, calendar of events, references, resources and links; and excellent opportunities to network with other individuals and societies in the field. The congress and journal give members the opportunity to present and publish their research. The European Society for Swallowing Disorders, ESSD, participates in World Swallowing Day by conducting a short survey for collecting data on how many patients are screened or assessed for oropharyngeal dysphagia, what screening or assessment tools are used, what type of patients are screened and how oropharyngeal dysphagia is reported. In addition to collecting useful information on screening and diagnosis, ESSD also promotes the use of ICD codes for dysphagia in medical reports that increase the visibility of the condition. The Society is a member of the Acadèmia de Ciències Mèdiques de Catalunya i Balears and members will have access to their educational platform, Agora.
