The Society encourages the development of the geosciences in New Zealand .it  has more than 900 members, an elected national committee, eight branches and a number of subcommittees and special interest groups. Membership is open to all who are interested in the geosciences. The Society holds a conference in a different part of New Zealand each year, presents annual awards, and publishes a newsletter every four months. The Annual Conference is the highlight of the Society's year. Conferences are usually held at the end of November or early December. Organisation is rotated around the main branch centres. The society has many branches around New Zealand. James Hector was a pioneer explorer, geologist, and natural scientist who established many of New Zealand's scientific organisations. Geologists annually commemorate Hector Day, the anniversary of his birthday on 16 March 1834, with field trips in different parts of New Zealand. Picnics, quizzes, cricket matches etc have also been known to break out.
