Earlier the society was known as Geoscience Electronics Group, formed in 1962, after that it’s named changed to Geoscience Electronics Society in January 1978, in 1980 it was renamed as Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society.  From 1981 to 2016, it has been sponsoring the famous International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) series. The field of interest of this society includes theory, concepts and techniques of science applied to remote sensing of earth, atmosphere, oceans etc. The members of this association include the experts from engineering as well as scientific disciplinary. Professionals from engineering background support geoscientific investigations with the development of hardware techniques while the scientific professionals evaluate the remote sensing activities in these areas. The society aids in close exchange of technical information among the members through discussions. GRS is one of the world’s largest professional societies. IGARSS sponsored by GRS is attended by more than 2700 professional working in the field of engineering as well as other scientific professionals every year. GRS provides quarterly magazines, educational programs, industrial newsletter, on-line lectures etc. to promote the knowledge of people regarding remote sensing.
