The Hellenic Society of Medical Oncology (HeSMO) is a not-for-profit scientific organisation founded in 1986. HeSMO was structured to promote and propagate the exchange of current information and concepts relating to prevention, diagnosis, clinical research and treatment of cancer. Amongst its goals, the provision of enhanced educational opportunities for physicians is of high priority, treating patients with neoplastic diseases, in Greece.
On the 4th of July 1985,the Society was founded in Athens, by the first 22 founding members at the hotel "St George Lycabetus". The Society has got its own Headquarters, since 1997. It is located at 105 Alexandras Avenue, Athens, 114 75 (4th Floor). Subsequently, from March 1999, HeSMO is reckoning in the internet with its identifiable website.
In 1992, HeSMO arranged its 1st Hellenic congress of Clinical Oncology and from the time when the Society is organising a Hellenic congress of Clinical Oncology for every 2 years. HeSMO also has its good share in Education and Research in Medical Oncology. HeSMO provides scholarships and encourages active research in oncology. Later, it also helps in publishing the work through its Scientific Online Databases namely, Elsevier, PubMed, SciVerse Scopus and Thomson Reuters Web of Knowledge.
