A W Skempton became President in 1957 and the secretariat moved to the UK. ICSMFE became a well-known pattern from 1953 and the Jubilee Conference held in San Francisco in 1985. 2000 delegates and guests attended the conference. In 1981 the Steering Committee decided to give a better attention to the rapidly expanding Society. The Board meets every year and the Council meets once in every two years. In 1997, Council approved a change in name to the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering to reflect more perfectly the activities of the Society.
