Nigeria amalgamated with other republics and the universal biosafety community with the creation of the Nigerian Biological Safety Association (NiBSA) in the year November 24, 2010. Headquartered in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory it is a multidisciplinary league which held its initial meeting in November 24, 2010 with the appointment of a Protem Executive Body. It is a sovereign, non-profit union that offers a forum for issue –based deliberations and addresses concerns with respect to biosafety and biosecurity. It is open to anyone operational in the field of biorisk management, and provides an exclusive opportunity for interacting. Varied range of members from students to experts, from fields as diverse as healthcare, emergency response, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, industries, NGOs, agriculture, engineering and regulatory affairs.
NiBSA is dedicated to augmenting the awareness, understanding and elevation of biological safety and biosecurity towards a goal of biological risk reduction in Nigeria. The coalition tries to move along worldwide biosafety and biosecurity in Nigeria. This is brought about by working with different Bureaus, Sectors and Agencies of government, two-pronged and multifaceted organizations and community assemblies in safeguarding and accounting for resources that characterize biological propagation threats by firming up nationwide networks to swiftly recognize, settle and respond to biological coercions. Nigeria has faced major disease outbursts recently characterized by Ebola and Lassa fever.
