The North American Bramble Growers Association is a tax-free, charitable organization addition to the North American Raspberry & Blackberry Association. It started in August, 1998 to expedite NABGA’s ability to receive donations and make contributions to fund bramble research. In 2016, the Foundation has granted a total of $219,849 to 89 projects at universities in Canada and U.S. and the USDA research centres. Funds for NABG-RF come from several sources, including NARBA membership donations, dues, and fundraising event. A part of each grower membership goes directly to the Research Foundation, In September, 2007, the Foundation begun a Nursery Contribution Program, encouraging blackberry/raspberry nurseries to contribute $.1 per plant sold to the Foundation. All donations to the Research Foundation qualify as contributions.
It is closely associated with the North American Raspberry & Blackberry Association, but is a separate body. New Foundation guidelines adopted in March, 2015 established the Executive Board of NARBA as the Board of Trustees of the Foundation, though separation between their accounts and meetings is clearly outlined. They also defined the role and association of the Foundation’s Research Committee and made other developments that brought the Foundation more in line with putative non-profit practices. The Research Committee makes endorsements to the Board of Trustees evaluating proposals for funding. Each year these funds are available for grants an appeal for Proposals is developed in the fall and emailed to the interested researchers and is posted on NARBA’s website. Funding priorities for the year are decided by the NARBA Executive Council in consultation with the Research Committee (NABGRF) and other leaders in the industry. The co-coordinators of the Research Committee, Gina Fernandez and Jeff Chandler coordinate the process.
