SEL is the European society for the study of butterflies and moths, their conservation and their natural habitats. It was founded in 1976. It aims at promoting the collaboration among lepidopterists of Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia, and promoting conservation of Lepidoptera and their habitats.
This Society promotes research in lepidopterology and dissemination of the findings by arranging the biennial congresses and through the publication of the biennial scientific journal Nota Lepidopterologica. The collaboration between amateurs and professional researchers is its strong point.
The membership of the society comprises of a big proportion of the active European professional researchers in the fields of Lepidoptera systematics, diagnosis, behaviour, faunistic, biogeography, biodiversity, ecology and conservation biology. It similarly comprises a huge proportion of the European amateur specialists, those who contribute greatly to the knowledge about this group of insects. For many SEL members, Lepidoptera collection is a major interest, and the society has a shining stand on this issue.
